Marine Corps Order 1029.24G Defines how a Marine should look at all times. It covers everything from proper uniform, haircuts and tattoos to what constitutes beach attire. It states a Marine should “present the best possible image at all times and continue to set the example in military presence. According to the order, tattoos or brands on the neck and head are prohibited. In other areas of the body, tattoos or brands that are prejudicial to good order, discipline and morale or are of a nature to bring discredit upon the Marine Corps are also prohibited. Another order, MCO P1100.72C, Military Personnel Procurement Manual, Volume 2, Enlisted Procurement, further defined unacceptable tattoos. The criteria included tattoos of a sexist nature, such as expressing nudity; or of a racist, eccentric or offensive nature; or with an association with conduct or substance prohibited by the Marine Corps Drug Policy or the Uniform Code of Military Justice; or that depict vulgar or anti-American contempt, anti-social behavior, bring possible discredit upon the Marine Corps or association with any extremist group or organization. What the Marines say to some Marines, the idea of discredit or an offensive nature can leave the order open for discussion. What is offensive to some may not be so to others. Also a quote from the Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps: “Yes, tattoos are acceptable, but we draw the line on some of it. If you plan on making a career in the Marine Corps, you have to be very cognizant of the type of tattoos you’re going to get. Most likely it’s going to affect your career’s progression.” Don't try to out sea lawyer me. I've been doing it for FAR too long In the end though, wait until you've earned your Eagle, Globe and Anchor...then if the mood still strikes you when you're a boot, do what you want. Cheers!

as you all know i love tattoos ;D
and im working on a full body suit in japanese style
got my both upper arms covered with ink and also got a big back piece of a dragon from neck till bottom
as you know tattoos cost alot of money (i pay about 125 $ a hour )so think of the costs...and i will go for about 3 a 4 hours a session
also think what you exactly want too have and if ya know it ,still think about it longer also the question in color or black and white than the seize ,how big do you want it? and do you want it with much detail? the more detail the more youre tattoo will fade out when ur aging (thats why ive got the really big tattoos)
and than also were do you want it upperarms are not that painfull ,bones ,soft meat, kidneys, and the nerves are very painfull
really think it over before you decide it looks more a ink hype atm with programs like london ink ,miami ink ,and la ink
also look at future jobs i had the luck that my boss found it good that i have them but when i am with customers my tattoos must be covered and that is not very cool on hot days
i hope you take a wise decision.....
greets a tattoed sudde

Before you go and get a tattoo, go and check out an event where you see lots of them. For me, I lived closed to Sturgis, SD. The Sturgis Motorcycle Rally (every year in August) for 1 week turns this town of about 5,000 into the largest city in the state with about 500,000+ people. Needless to say, it didn't take long of looking at under dressed individuals with aged tattoos to make me not want one...

Alright, the official word from Sergeant Peterson (my recruiter) is that tattoos of a non-racist, non-gang related, non-vulgar manner are allowed. However, tattoos that can be seen while in uniform (so tattoos on the head, neck, face, arms below the elbows, and below the knees) are typically frowned upon and need a clearence. Hope that helps

now now. lets not turn this into an interbranch war. lets not forget we all serve for the same reason.
on that note. the army has more air assaults. more amphibous assaults than the Marine corps.
the US Army trains the Marines are our jump and ranger schools. Marines also come to fort knox to learn how to be tankers. Marines teach thier own infantry. and the Navy teaches thier pilots.

now now. lets not turn this into an interbranch war. lets not forget we all serve for the same reason. No knives in this gun fight. on that note. the army has more air assaults. more amphibous assaults than the Marine corps. Yeah, but we win ours. the US Army trains the Marines are our jump and ranger schools. Marines also come to fort knox to learn how to be tankers. Marines teach thier own infantry. and the Navy teaches thier pilots. USMC trains the infantry on home soil because the Army couldn't handle our level of training. A bit too rigorous. Jump school is run by the Army, but when you go, you'll notice the Marine Corps instructors on staff (No need to build two jump schools when the principle is the same "We high enough?" check "We pack the chutes?" check "Time to jump out of a perfectly good aircraft!" Tank school. We send our tank drivers to knox to learn basic tank driving skills (i.e. don't run over stuff we want to keep school), from there, once a tanker gets his driver's license, we send him to school at Camp LeJeune. When it comes to warfighting, pound for pound, the Army can't hold a candle to the USMC. The point being, they fight different types of wars. USMC is designed to crack the defenses of whatever nation we invade, and make a hole for the Army to flood with it's legions of lemmings... err soldiers. Reminds me of a joke.... Two soldiers and two Marines go into the latrine after lunch. They all stand at the stalls and handle the business of their bladders. After they finish the two Marines head for the door, the soldiers to the sinks. Thinking fast, one of the Soldiers quips to the Marines, "Hey boys, in Basic, our Drill Sergeants taught us to wash our hands after we use the restroom!" to which one of the Marines snorts "We learned not to pee on our hands." So yah, it's all out of love. We play for the same team, we fight for the same cause and in the end we're all brothers. Marines just do it better, faster and correct the first time more often. We have to, there's less of us, so the level of competition is higher (from a Marine's perspective). Semper Fi! ..and as always, Cheers!

who said anything about knives. my kbar is holtered. and your right. the marines are a more "lean" fighting force. with light infantry units. the way i see it. the marines are good for short battles but cant hold thier own over a long period of time. not to be cliche but if the army and marines went to war. the armys overwhelming logistics and support staff (9-1 support to infantry ratio) the army would win. lets be realistic. the Marines need the Army. and the Army needs the Marines. one without the other. would be..well doable. but lets remember WW2 the marines invanded the islands in the pacific. the army air and sea assaulted normandy. and then 3 more combat jumps in europe. And im pretty sure. we beat the germans before yall beat the Japaniese and during operation desert shield the army light infantry and marine light infantry were the first deployed to saudi arabia. in OIF the army and marines spearheaded at 2 seperate locations heading north for baghdad. afganistan Army and Marine special forces were conducting operations at the same time. presently in afganistan the marines out number the army like 3 to 1? but thats after the army was understaffed there since the inital troop surge in iraq in 2007 -Tony

You know, I just realized something.
We've been doing this Army v. Marine thing, lest we forget who the true trouble child is in all this:
The Air Farce.
ha!
Also of note, the Army had a lot more help than the Marines did in WW2.

Canadian military are rather strong, granted they weren't AS strong back then due to other MAJOR foul ups by their brit commanders... (read: Paschendale), however, they DID offer massive air and ground support all things told...they didn't score the touchdown, but they put us at the 30 for sure.
Granted, I must disclose I am a bit biased. I married a Canadian, so I've been indoctrinated.

As prior Army myself, I'll avoid the sarcasm (which is odd for me) and just say that I appreciate all members of our Armed Forces. You all have a very valuable part in your own role. Thank You for your Service...

Nah, this was all playful banter. Us old warhorses get a lil jumpy too. All in good fun. They all know they don't wanna get into a real fight AGAINST me heh...I get the upper hand cuz I posted first? Bah, all that said, I respect anyone (yah, even those losers in the Air Farce) who wears a uniform to defend his/her country. Unlike my betters, I can't let the sarcasm go (it's so deeply burnt in, I can only tone it down), but as I said, I feel the RIGHT to poke fun, because of my own response to my country's call to service and to arms. For anyone wanting to go, it's not an easy task, and you WILL be put in a position to stand in harm's way and I salute you for that. I personally served my country so that my children won't have to, and hope that when it's time for them to decide, that a). they have a choice, b) a country to defend and c) they opt not to. Again, all things being what they are, I enjoyed it. I met a lot of VERY interesting people, became a man there, and saw the world. Hey, I turned 18 in boot camp. Granted, I didn't get my first tattoo until I was 20 (see how I brought this thread back to the topic? you like that don't ya Jeff), but I also happen to buy into the whole "it's your right" bit. The bible doesn't say "Do not get tattoos", it says treat your body well. Tattoos are decoration. I mean, churches have carpet, stained glass, wall hangings, shrubbery outside, etc. Those are our modern day temples. As for your choice of ink, just keep in mind you're gonna have to look at it for the rest of your life (may it be a long one), and one day you'll have to explain to your children why you have "that" on your body. I've already done it, and I'm not ashamed of any of my ink. I know others that got stupid stuff on their bodies like nude women, crude images and awful language that have to explain why they were such idiots when they were younger. The only thing more dangerous than a 19 year old with a badge (MP Joke there) is an 18 year old with a pocket full of cash in a tattoo parlor. I digress. Cheers!

lol, I love the fact that all of the branches can poke fun at each other. You should here some of the stuff that gets thrown around here at my home. Most of my family is Navy (father, grandfather of both sides, uncle [Marine, but there isn't a Department of the Marines], and both of my birth parents [supposedly]) and I'm an Army ROTC Cadet. Not only that but my father is an ex-Navy spook (Intel specialist, served both as Enlisted and Officer) and I'm Infantry (at least that is my current top choice) so I can dig him there. He can have his nice air conditioned state room, I'll take a fox hole any day.
Personally, I'll never get a tattoo. I like the way my body is, and I'll keep it that way.
