The History of our mistletoe tradition is worth noting. It dates back to the Druids in Northern Europe. They believed mistletoe had a curative power and thought it could even cure broken relationships. When two enemies found themselves under a tree with mistletoe above, they saw it as a sign from God that they should lay down their weapons and be reconciled.
When Missionaries moved into Northern Europe they realized this was a perfect symbol for what occurred on the first Christmas. Christ’s birth ushered in the opportunity of reconciliation between man and God; the mistletoe offered a powerful tool for communicating this truth. Although today we associate the greenery with romance, its deeper meaning provides a rich reminder of what God has done through the birth of His Son.
As Paul writes in 2 Corinthians 5:18, “All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ..”. This reminds us that humankind could not reconcile themselves to God. Only God could and He did it by sending His Son, The Lord Jesus Christ, down to earth to pay our penalty for sin!
Christ no longer the Baby of Bethlehem as so many people seem to think, but He is the Savior of all mankind! He not only came to show us our sins, but to be the One who would remove them and bring us into a love relationship with the Father.
So the next time you spot a mistletoe this Christmas season, remember-God has already “kissed” you by sending you His one and only Son, Jesus Christ.
Now think about that!

I just hung a sprig of mistletoe at Castle Peace a couple of hours ago, at the entry to the office area (and I've "caught" my wife and daughters there at least once each already ). Thank you for the inspirational reminder of the deeper meaning of reconciliation that this little bit of greenery embodies.

Interesting piece of history, there. I was not aware of mistletoe's druidic significance, only that it was a parasitic plant... On a side note, I was at a holiday party one time and my friends tried to get me to kiss my then-girlfriend in front of them with mistletoe... some children never grow up
