EDIT: Here is a downloadable PDF file of this guide, it is roughly twice as large with a lot more information. SF_Recon_Guide.pdf
Detailed guide about SF Recon by Strategy-=Of-God=-
One of the less well known maps in AA, and one of the most underated, SF Recon is a large (the largest in AA) sniper oriented map. Recon is roughly 10 times as large as MOUT McKenna. Many players who play the map the first time are clueless as to where they are, and even how to secure the objectives. As you may have guessed, the greatest deterrant to its popularity is its size. This is a guide devoted to orienting you on the key locations and hot spots of the map.
The key to learning the geography of this map is learning where all the landmarks are. The major landmarks on this map are towers, oil fields, roads, and objectives. We'll start with towers.
There are six towers located throughout the map. The north, west, south, east, ruined, and camp towers. You should be able to see at least one tower at any place on the map. You can climb into these for a better scope of the map, but you will most likely point your self out to the op4. The towers are also destructible to a well placed RPG, so don't think you are in a safe haven once you climb into one.
Oil fields
There are two oil fields on the map. The north field, and the south field. There are three fuel pumps at each field and they provide excellent cover. The north field is located at the very center of the map, the south field is directly toward the east of it. The ground is very flat around the oil fields so the only cover you have are the pumps. Try to stay behind these or barbed wire while around this area.
There are two roads on the map. The north road, and the west road. The north road is located along the top of the map while the west road is on the left side of the map. Each road has a designated area around it known as north road approach, or west road area.
The objectives
There are three objectives: A, B, and C. This map is unique by the fact that the offense only needs 2 of the three to win the round. A and B are connected by a large canyon that stretches in between the two. C is very remote and usually is only important with a large amount of players. The west road leads directly to C, and the south oil field looks over A and B.
Securing the objectives
What many people don't realize the first time they play the map is that the location of the objectives are out of reach. They are separated from the map by strings of barbed wire and there is no way to reach the objectives during the game. But, you aren't supposed to reach them, you are only supposed to get within view of them. Once you are at the viewpoint to secure the objective (at the barbed wire fence) pull out your binoculars or scope (for the M4-MOD, only the acog works, all other scopes do) and focus on the "object" in the distance. EG, a hangar, helicopters, or a fuel depot. Once you have the object in your scope, press and hold E.
Here is a map with the locations circled in blue, the bold letters within the circles is the acronym for the location. For example, NT means north tower. Or, noil means north oil field.
Last notes: The spawn locations are pretty simple to understand. In the top right corner near the road above the EastTower is the primary spawn for assault. The defense starts in that lighted area to the left of the north oil field. Here's where it gets a little tricky. Once there are more than 5 people on assault, the secondary spawn opens up. 4 people can spawn at secondary. They spawn where the north road and the west road meet. Defense starts at the center of the map so that when there are enough people, it can defend equally well on both fronts.
Thanks for reading, I hope you understand the map better. Be sure to maxsimise the full map pic so that you understand the descriptions a bit better.
Set your brightness and gamma as high as they can go and set your contrast slightly below the max. This will help with the darkness to the extent that you will not need to use night vision.
Also, be sure to have good headphones as you can hear people running from really far away.
The ideal M4-SOPMOD for this map is the Acog 4X with bipod. (don't use the flare unless you want to just have some fun, there is a bug where if an op4 picks up your weapon, he will get 4 M203 grenades. So it is prefed not to use the flares , also, if you put your setting like I said, you wont even need them)
