Well, I saw this forum and figured I'd add my own two cents on how to successfully win at both Assault and Defense on the map known as Pipeline. I've played this map since the beginning of America's Army and feel that I confidently know how to win at this map. I must implore that you need to learn how to use your sound! That is ESSENTIAL to any individual wishing to have better success at this game.
First, for those who don't know the map, allow me to explain what this map is all about. Pipeline is a very classic Assault vs Defense map, much like Collapsed Tunnel or Weapons Cache. The possible choice of weapons are just like MOUT McKenna(M16, SAW). However on this map, there is a slot called G, which stands for Grenadier. It is the M203 and it's a combination of the M16 and a Grenade Launcher. You are given seven grenades, one already chambered and six to reload with. If you are a rifleman or a grenadier, you are given one nade, two smokes, and two flashes. If you are the Automatic Rifleman, you are just given one nade. The object of Assault is to infiltrate the building, cautiously and strategically shut down all three valves(Primary, Secondary, and Exterior) to win the round or hack the Main Contral Panel in the Main Control Room to win the round. Simultaneously, the Defense's job is to make sure that doesn't happen and needs to stop the Assault team with all capable means necessary.
Alright, I've photoshopped a map to provide some type of visual. The best way to fully understand this "guide" is to try it out. Honestly. That's the best way to learn.
I. Assault: There are many ways you can go on Assault and many things you can do. Let's start out with the most common way of getting into the building.
A. Main Entrance - This is the most infamous and common way of getting into the facility. If you have the AR, this is very handy for you if you know what you're doing. At the start of the round, start rushing in a southwesternly direction toward the first door that you see. That is the Main Entrance. Be careful, though. Bad guys will pop out of that door before you get there and throw nades out if there are enough people on the server. If there are six or more people on defense, your chances of somebody getting a nade out there before you get into the building increase by a factor of ten because Fireteam B on Defense spawns on the Main Pump First Floor and can get there a lot quicker than you. If this is happening, approach the door slowly and cautiously. Listen for flashes and footsteps. Open the door, stay outside, and check around for E's. Go to the door entrance, lean around the corner to the right and check that door in case they've got it cracked and they're waiting on you. Take out any bad guys if necessary. Go to the next door and listen for footsteps, nades, etc. Open the door if you don't hear anything. Now, you've got four common places where bad guys can be.
a. To the left of the door, in the corner.
b. To the right of the door, up the stairs, and prone(or crouched) at the top of the stairs in the break room.
c. Diagonally across from the door in the hallway around the corner, either sitting right there waiting for you to come out of the door or around the corner waiting for you to come around that corner.
d. If you make past the door, check above you. There's a railing by a vending machine. They like to camp there as well.
If you're clear on all accounts, you have two options: break room or main corridor intersection. The break room will take you either to the bathroom, which leads you to the Main Pump Room where most bad guys will camp or be, or the Vent Access Room. The Vent Access Room houses two options: you can make your way to the Main Control Room via the ventilation system, or hit the Secondary Valve which is below the Vent Access Room. The choice is yours.
B. North Side Entrance - This route can be very complicated. When you rush out of spawn, go to your right and head straight. You'll see a side entrance ahead of you. Now, when you go in, be very cautious of the East Vent(the vent shaft that opens up right above Main Entrance). A lot of defenders will go into that vent, go prone, and try to snipe guys going North Outside or North Entrance. Sometimes they'll pop out of the vent with their 203 and nail ya. They can be annoying. There's a way to handle that -- either get an AR or Grenadier to lay down cover fire on that vent, or pray they don't kill you. It's a LOSE/LOSE situation if you try to fire back in the open. If you can make it inside the entrance and close the door, AWESOME. Crack the door back open, give yourself some cover, and fire at will. Now, what's to say you won't get flanked from baddies rushing the North Side Entrance? Oh, it happens. You've got to be very cautious when you're dealing with this entrance. If defense has more than five people on the team, then there's a possibility. If they have more than 9 on the team, then it's going to happen because Fireteam C on Pipeline spawns INSIDE the North Pump Room, which is connected to the North Side Entrance. When you get inside, listen for any spam flashes or nades coming from the North Pump Room, take cover outside for those. Make your way down the corridor to the door that leads inside the North Pump Room. The best way to get past that door in my opinion is to crack it open and smoke it because so many guys will cover that door like the end of the world is coming if they let you through it. Rush through the smoke(NOT BY YOURSELF, GET OTHERS TO RUSH WITH YOU. It's EASY to hit one moving target, it's HARD to hit four or five.) You've got many places where bad guys can camp:
a. The vent. There's a ladder inside the Vent Access Room that leads to inside the Vent Shaft. Bad guys can go prone there and get a perfect shot on the door. It's a straight and up a little shot if you want to fire back. Good luck.
b. The barrels. On the main floor of that room, there are barrels a little to your right and ahead of you, underneath the stairs. Bad guys will camp there, so watch it.
c. The barrels II. Behind the barrels I talked about before, on a little higher flooring, there is another set of barrels that sit in front of the West Corridor door. They'll camp there, too.
d. The catwalk. North Pump comes complete with a catwalk to your left that you can only get to via the Vent Access Room. (Hint: you're not there yet.)
If you've made it into the room, awesome. You have 3 options: you can get the Secondary Valve and have fun in the tunnels getting the other valves. You can go straight through the room to the door way ahead of you and reach Main Entrance and Main Corridor Intersection that way. Beware, there's always a lot of action there. Also, when you go through the door into the North Pump, there's a set of stairs to your right. Go up those stairs and you'll be in the Vent Access Room, which will lead you to the Main Control Room as I said earlier. Or you can go to the catwalk and cover whoever is getting the valve, if someone is.
C. The Oil Entrance - Now, personally, I don't like this entrance. Why? Because any team or individual can get bottlenecked in the tunnels and get severely owned by a 203er. To get to the oil entrance, head straight out of the spawn. You'll see ahead and to your left a little bit a ladder that leads down into the Oil Towers. Go down the ladder(or just run off the edge of it and land on the railing below -- you'll get hurt, but you'll still be green, at least the bad guys won't hear your loudness on the ladder). Immediately you'll see a door to your right, that's the entrance. Now four possibilites can happen once you walk through that door:
a. Someone will rush out of that door before you get there, most likely an AR guy. If that happens, run or return fire. Never nade or flash, because you'll have teammates around.
b. Someone will be camping right behind that door. In that case, crack it open - clear it with a flash - and move on.
c. Once you get in the door and it's clear, there's another door(you're just in a small room). That door leads to the North East Maintenance Tunnel. When you open that door, it opens away from you, so sometimes guys will camp in that left corner RIGHT next to the door. Check that before you move on.
d. Once again, you're in the small room. Once you open that second door to the tunnel, a guy could be prone at the end of it(it's a small tunnel, which takes a 90 degree turn into a tunnel twice the size) and will kill you if you don't flash him or take him out. Be careful of this.
Now if you've made it to the 90 degree turn of the North East Maintenace Tunnel, well you're dead. Seriously. 95% of the time a Grenadier will be waiting at the opposite end of that tunnel(the bigger one) and will blow you up, along with your team. You can either smoke the 90 degree turn and rush him(which works because those 203s are so unpredictable on when they want to blow up or not -- AR first!) or you can have your Grenadier sacrifice his life and they can blow each other up. However, your guy might get lucky and the enemy's 203 might not blow up. Once you make it down the East Maintenance Tunnel, you'll be at the Primary Valve. Congratulations. That's the hardest valve to get. You have two routes: either make a right and head to the other valves(via Primary Maintenance, North Maintenance tunnels) or go to your left and in front of you and you'll be on the Main Pump Basement Floor.
D. North/South Outside - These routes lead inevitably to the Exterior Valve or the West Entrance. They both have the same kinds of obstacles -- bad guys will rush and try and nade you, or camp and pick you off. To go to North Outside, you simply take a right turn out of spawn and another right turn right before the North Side Entrance. Keep following along the building and you'll come upon a left turn down West Outside. Now the tricky part here is rushers and campers. Rushers will have you dead, unless you nade him or shoot him first, before you even make the left turn down West Outside. Campers will kill you once you've made that turn. Most of the time people camp in the West Entrance(which is WAY down at the South side of the building once you've made that left turn into West Outside). You can't 203 him, but you can spray that AR if you want or single-shot him to death with your M16. Once you've cleared that, make your way south to the open gate. Go inside and that entrance is into the Exterior Valve Room. Simple, right? Watch out for people who camp in there. Yes, people will camp in there for easy kills.
South Outside is easier, in my opinion. The best way to go South is to make a left out of spawn. Now once you'll do this, you'll see sheds to your left. Follow the right side of them and go behind the big oil towers(east side of the oil towers). Go all the way down there until you reach the corner of the big wall that's on your left. You'll see that you are forced to go right and once you look down there, you can see all the way down until the end of South Outside. Sometimes guys will camp down there and try and pick you off, or a 203er will sit down there and 203 you. I've even see a lot of guys rush that and try to take you down with the AR. So be careful. Once that is clear, make your way ALL the way down(heading west) until you are forced to make another right turn. That corner side of the building is called the West Entrance. The entry is ahead and to the right of you, but be careful. Once you make that right turn, there's a concrete wall in front of you that helps guard Exterior. Some guys will be camping behind it and waiting for you. Other guys will be camping inside West Entrance with a flash or frag ready. You've got to be cautious and observant. West Entrance will lead you into the Main Pump Room and if you continue past West Entrance, you'll see the open gate like you did if you went North Outside. Once again, that'll take you to the Exterior Valve.
II. Now you're probably thinking: "Okay, I've done all of this, but how do I win!?" Each of these ways to infiltrate the building will take you to victory if you successfully get in. The HARD part of winning at Pipeline is GETTING IN THE BUILDING! Once you've accomplished that and cleared at least one of these entrances, then you're set! Just be cautious, careful, and take out the bad guys or get the objectives. The valves are below the buildings in a series of tunnels and the Main Control Panel is the Main Control Room, in the up-most part of the Main Pump Room. The Main Pump Room is where most of Defense spawns and camps. It's hard to infiltrate, but NOT impossible. Hit that room with air-bursting frags and flashes. Smoke the primary valve. Sneak through the ventilation system. If you've got guys simultaneously trying to get into the Main Pump Room, Defense WILL have its hands full.
End Guide.
I hope this helps out some. I know it's very descriptive and hard to follow, so sorry for that. I'll be posting the Defense side to this later. Defense is pretty easy, not much to talk about there. You can either be a defender of the objectives, a camper, or a rusher. I prefer to rush and defend objectives. I love rushing the Main Entrance and North Outside, it's fun.
