I'm primarily into CCM and "Praise & Worship" music (hmmm, what else would you expect from someone whose educational background includes a minor in Church Music Ministries? ) ... but I can appreciate most musical styles: country, jazz, classical, swing, baroque, R&B, opera (yes, really ), pop, even some rap and hip-hop if the words are clean and understandable -- about the only things that I don't like are music whose words dishonor my God, and so-called music that is mostly just screaming and/or shouting and/or loud noise amplified to slightly beyond the threshold of pain. As far as musical influences, I would have to say that my biggest current musical influence on the CCM side is Steven Curtis Chapman, closely followed by his protege band Casting Crowns; and on the P&W side is a virtual tie between Chris Tomlin and Matt Redman, leaning slightly more toward Tomlin perhaps. In my earlier years, Steve Green was my biggest musical influence (yes, I'm old enough to remember his early years of recording! -- but at least I'm not really old like Strings and Reaper, who once waited all night in line to get the first copies of David's debut recording Psalms from a Pleasant Pasture [j/k guys ]).

The short version: I listen to classical, jazz, and rock, in descending order of preference. The long version: I dislike "classical" classical, like the names you associate most with classical; eg: Mozart, Beethoven, etc. Some of Beethoven's stuff is okay, but much of it sounds like everything else from the period. Mozart's music, I believe, is like Counter-Strike. It was great when it came out, but now it serves as nothing more than the rudimentary building block for things; there are bigger and better compositions to move on to. I listen more to things along the lines of Chopin, Rachmaninoff, and Prokofiev, basically late romantic period composers and 20th century Russian composers. I also delve into more modern stuff like Eric Whitacre and Philip Glass. Jazz, I like stuff from all over the spectrum. Ella Fitzgerald to Diana Krall, Duke Ellington to Charlie Parker, Glenn Miller to Gordon Goodwin; it's all there. Finally, I've recently been on an alt-rock stint with the likes of Breaking Benjamin, Audioslave, Chevelle, Anberlin, etc. with some pop-ish stuff thrown in occasionally like Ben Folds. But I also can work with metal (especially during workouts) like Drowning Pool and Demon Hunter. I like a lot, just not what everyone else I meet happens to like

Where do I start? lol I love most rock, but only music with good lyrics. Any music that doesn't honor God really isn't music at all...just noise. Some of my favorite artists [in no particular order]: Anberlin <-- One to check out! Kutless Skillet <-- One to check out! Seven Places [R.I.P] <-- [Still] One to check out! Kids in the Way Relient k Switchfoot The Wedding <-- One to check out! The Great Bear Trio [two brothers i know that play about 15 instruments each ] Fazeshift [local band] I like tons more, but those are generally my favorites. I enjoy pretty much any uplifting music. If the music is depressing, I tend to tire of it. lol Your Brother in Christ -Matt
