[glow=teal,3,500]NOTE: This is an updated reposting of the popular "Fine Art of Keybinds" thread on our original clan forum. [HA]Willow--thanks for all the publicity that you gave to that post--it's the reason that it's been included in our new forum![/glow]
***************************************************************************
I think most of us are familiar with keybinds--what they are, how they work, how to set them up; but just in case, here's an overview.
Basically, a keybind is a command or series of commands that you can set up to enter automatically at the press of a single key on your keyboard. Whether you have made custom binds of your own or not, you do use keybinds (whether you know it or not!). Your basic movements (W, A, S, D) and actions (E, R, F, V, etc.) are actually keybinds set up in the "user.ini" file in your ArmyOps "System" folder.
"Custom keybinds" are a bit different. That's where you take a key that the system doesn't assign (or one that it does) and set up a personalized action for that key. You can do this in two ways:
1. open the console in AAO and type bind [key] [action]; for example--[glow=green,2,500]bind M CommoRadio | CommoSendMessage 2 | CallMedic[/glow]2. open the "user.ini" file in your ArmyOps "System" folder, scroll down to where the keybinds are listed (in the "Engine.Input" section, right after the "Aliases"), then type in the actions after the key (for example: P=TeamSay All units, report in so I know where NOT to shoot!)
You'll notice the | character in the first example above. This character is the key (bad pun intended) to combining multiple commands into a single keybind. (To make this symbol, use SHIFT-BACKSLASH.) Here's one example of this character in action:
** my key for when I'm pinned under heavy fire:
CommoRadio | CommoSendMessage 3 | TeamSay I'm taking fire in my position at ... | ReportIn
[Note: the first two commands give the "Cover me!" radio message; the third gives a team message about my situation; and the fourth gives my location (the standard "U" bind).]
You can also alter the keys that the system sets up automatically, such as in the "M" for medic example above, or such as my "F" (Fixjam) key:
TeamSay Fixing jam--bring bread & butter to ...| ReportIn | CommoRadio | CommoSendMessage 3 | Fixjam
This tells my teammates where I am and that I'm fixing a jam, and the "commo" lines give the "Cover me!" message.
***************************************************************************
I don't know about the rest of you, but I love seeing what other people have done with their keybinds--it gives me great ideas for my own keybinds.
So here's my plan for this thread: why don't we each post a list (from the "user.ini" file) of all the custom keybinds that we use? It would be interesting to see what each of us finds useful.
Remember, only include the custom keybinds (including any standard keys that you've modified). The easiest way would be to copy the whole list to the message entry window, then delete the ones that are standard. (Plus, that way you don't delete your standard keys from the actual "user.ini" file!)

NOTE: I set up the number pad as my "in tunnel" report-in's for MOUT_McKenna, to more accurately state my position. For the most part, it's set up starting with 0 at the loyalty end (outside), then in the loyalty end-tunnel (1-3), then the long tunnels (4-5), then the honor end-tunnel (7-9). 6 is an anomaly--since there's nothing between the 3 and 9 locations, I used it for the Alpha entrance. Hey, it works for me!

[NOTE: Do not make a keybind that uses "Reload |" or "Fire |". These have been determined to be part of a system bug exploit that gives a distinct and unfair advantage to the player using it (I say 'part' because I will not post the full command string for the exploit here). Effective 10/19/2004, it has been banned from our servers, and our CVAR checks enforce this with a time-out -- you will not be able to play on an -=Of-God=- server if one of your keys/buttons is bound to this value.]
For more information on actions and commos that can be bound to keys (plus a whole lot more insider info) -- check out THIS THREAD at the main AA forum. If you're looking for specific commo numbers, look for section 13, Commo List. ;D
