This is a guide for downloading/setting up the Ventrilo Overlay program (which has been cleared by AASA). Step 1Click this link and go to the download page. Download from either mirror. NOTE:You need to download the d3dx9_25.dll and put it where ever you extract VoiceOverlay to. Extract the it to where ever you want to (I put it into my Documents, but you might wanna put it somewhere else, make sure d3dx9_25.dll is in the same place as you extracted it, otherwise VoiceOverlay will not work). {EDIT BY PEACE: WARNING: Extract the files to a DIFFERENT DIRECTORY than your AA installation folder (a subdirectory of your Ventrilo folder would be a logical place for it). DO NOT PUT IT INTO YOUR AA FOLDER -- YOU WILL BE KICKED FOR IT, AND YOU PROBABLY WILL BE BANNED FOR IT, IF YOU DO THAT! But it's safe if you install it in a different directory, as suggested above. } Step 2Open VoiceOverlay. Click the options button and set your settings somewhat close to mine (experimentation is the best way to get it to just how you like it. Obviously don't enter my name in the blank. NOTE: Having Show All check will pretty much fill up the entire right side of your screen. Step 3Connect to a vent server and click the red button on VoiceOverlay (it will turn green when you have activated it). Make sure you have your firewall settings adjusted to let VoiceOverlay work, as this was a problem for me for awhile. Hopefully I didn't leave anything out and my guide will help with getting this helpful program up and running.

Well, with the pic he posted, we can see what it is, my question is "why" it is, LOL I have so many progs now, that I don't know what to do with them all. Why should I install this one? What does overlay do that the normal vent interface doesn't? jeff a.k.a. _FC_

The overlay lets you see who is talking while you're playing AA -- that's what it's good for . David, good post ... I added one important note that you left out, though.

Heard from a few sources that this will cause criticals. So if you use it and start getting criticals this would be a logical first step to look at.

From my experience, Minimizing and maximizing AA while using overlay will cause it, but if you don't minimize and maximize while playing you should be fine.

You'll also get a CE if you change the font settings while the game is running (says the voice of Experience ).

Well, does overlay work in AA itself or like someone mentioned, do you have to alt tab out in order to see the overlay interface?

There's a reason it's called an "overlay" ... the display sits above ("overlays") the AA display, so that you can still see who's talking while you're playing.

Yeah, I am reading about it now. What threw me(before I started reading about it at the overlay site) was Davids post about alt tabbing out of the game possibly causing the CE, and I thought he was alt tabbing out to see overlay. I just installed it and went through my options. Haven't tried it in game yet though. It says the font change won't take place till I start up AA the next time but I am too tired LOL. Maybe tomorrow after Convoy of Hope and the church cleaning I gotta do. Man, after all that, I still may be too tired LOL But hey, I have it now and tomorrow is always another day Jeff a.k.a. _FC_

There's a reason it's called an "overlay" ... the display sits above ("overlays") the AA display, so that you can still see who's talking while you're playing. Is there any way to toggle that on and off (like you can with XFire) in-game?

Check my Picture for the Key settings box, and then for the enable/disable overlay, that is defaulted to Alt+ O but you can change it to whatever you want.

I have followed your steps and it still don't work.. All I see is the word Ventrilo in red on my screen. It does not indicate who is talking on vent. Any suggestions?

I'm having the same problem as mick and i have my name typed in.
Also does the person who's talking need to have overlay for it to recognize it on the other persons end? (like if i have overlay and the person talking to me doesn't will it still work?)And do you need to spell your name exactly as it is in the game, or on vent, or does it matter?

I think you do need to have your name the same as it is in Vent in order for VoiceOverlay to recognize what channel you are in and display who's talking in your channel. And no, the other chatters do not need to have VoiceOverlay for you to see them talking.

That subject came up last night and you are right. You do have to have your vent name the same in your Overlay options as it is in vent or you won't see it. One of the guys I was playing with last night was having that exact problem.
